BLURB - HP Printer Ink Blockage
Posted: Tue Sep 20, 2016 3:32 pm
Computer giant HP is facing a backlash after blocking customers from using cheaper ink cartridges in its printers. The US company has quietly changed the settings on its machines to ensure they stop recognising many unofficial printer ink cartridges.
It means customers will be forced to use HP cartridges, which are considerably more expensive.
Dutch printer ink vendor 123inkt said it had received more than 1000 complaints in 1 day and that only OfficeJet, OfficeJet Pro and OfficeJet Pro X printers have been affected.
HP issued a statement saying
"The purpose of this update is to protect HP's innovations and intellectual property"
The update was apparently issued to prevent hackers accessing printers......yeah okay.
The firmware update has changed printer settings which now stop the printer from recognising unofficial ink cartridges which means people are now forced to pay for the official over-priced HP branded ones instead.
Some of the error messages user have received are:
"cartridge problem"
"one or more cartridges are missing or damaged"
"older generation cartridge".
If you're suffering from this issue I suggest complaining/contacting support: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/
However, 123inkt have said that official cartridges refilled with generic ink will function as normal.
