Does anyone know why alt codes are not working for me on Ubuntu, and how to let alt codes work?

The keys combination is different
First press CTRL + Shift + U , then enter the code you want(this list) then press Enter
example of the copyright sign (©)
Press Ctrl + Shift + U (then release it), enter 00a9, hit enter

On windows, I can use different ALT Key codes, like ALT+0233 and get é, or other symbols. How do I get this to work on Ubuntu?
